| 05 Sep 2009 | Titanic artifacts on view in Rochester Museum and Science Center beginning October |
Almost a century ago on a calm April night in 1912 the "unsinkable" Titantic went down after colliding with an iceberg. More than 1,500 of the 2280 passengers on board the maiden voyage of the world's largest ship perished that night including business tycoons, artists and film stars, government dignitaries and immigrants dreaming of a new life in America.. Ninety-seven years later, the Rochester Museum & Science Center in Rochester, New York will pay tribute to the tragedy beginning October 19 with the opening of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, featuriing more than 125 items recovered from the wreckage.. The exhibition focuses on the Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations. Some of the most intriguing objects recovered include perfume from a maker who was traveling to New York to sell his samples, china etched with the logo of the elite White Star Line, and personal items such as a shoe brush, a sock, a cigar holder, or the top of a toothpaste jar— these and many other authentic objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered. You are quickly transported back to 1912 upon entrance to the museum where you receive a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger aboard Titanic. You then begin a chronological journey through the life of the Titanic, moving through the ship’s construction, to life on board, to the tragic sinking and amazing rescue efforts. |

| 02 Aug 2009 | 'Titanic' To Get A 3D Makeover: Start Planning To Dodge Icebergs & A Giant Sinking Ship Now! |
Jack and Rose's "Titanic" love will indeed go on... and on... and on thanks to a newly announced 3D makeover. The MTV Movies Blog caught up with "Titanic" director James Cameron at Comic-Con where he revealed his plans to "dimensionalize" the 1997 blockbuster. Working on the upcoming 3D flick "Avatar" is what inspired James Cameron to give his watery epic the multi-dimensional makeover. According to Cinematical, the process will take one year to 14 months to complete, meaning the revamped film could likely hit the big screen sometime in 2011, probably around the much-coveted holiday season. News that Rose (Kate Winslet), Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and their "Titanic" shipmates will rise again in 3D got us thinking about which scenes we're stoked to see in eye-popping detail. |

| 19 Jul 2009 | Haitian-born man was the Titanic's only-known black passenger |
When W. Mae Kent watched the 1997 "Titanic" movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film captured her imagination, but she walked out of the theater with a question on her mind. "Where are the black folks?" asked Kent, who thought a black person in 1912 would be hired to wash dishes, shine shoes or shovel coal. A month or so later, Kent was listening to the "Tom Joyner Morning Show" on her drive to work when the radio personality gave his listeners a little-known black history fact: Joseph Phillipe Lemercier Laroche was a black passenger aboard that ill-fated vessel. "I almost swerved off the road," said Kent, who started taking quick notes upon hearing Joyner. |
